Noor Marcel, a recent master's graduate in political science, reflects on his journey as a human rights and humanitarian affairs minor and the impact of his internship on his future career goals.

Driven by a passion for promoting human rights, Noor chose the human rights program at UNL. He advises students interested in human rights advocacy to start by getting involved in their local communities, particularly in areas like housing, transportation, and education, and to support organizations focused on refugees and immigrants. During his time at UNL, Noor interned at the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement (CIRA) as an education and housing intern.

He explains, "Interning in these roles showed me how I can contribute to human rights work in my own community by improving education and housing opportunities for refugees and immigrants. The experience also emphasized the importance of volunteer work within local communities, and after my internship, I continued volunteering with CIRA’s housing team. This role has inspired me to pursue a career focused on refugee resettlement."

Noor is currently working as a parole officer for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) community supervision department and plans to transition to a non-profit organization specializing in refugee resettlement.
